ADHD ASSESSMENTS

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the way the brain regulates attention, activity and executive functioning. While it is often associated with difficulties with focus, impulsivity and hyperactivity, many individuals also experience challenges with organisation, time management, emotional regulation and working memory.

ADHD presents differently from person to person and often looks different in children, adolescents and adults. Our assessments recognise these differences and consider the whole person, rather than relying on stereotypes or assumptions about what ADHD “should” look like.

You may recognise some of the following experiences in yourself or someone you care about:

Finding it difficult to maintain attention or concentration
Struggling with organisation, planning or time management
Feeling restless, even when sitting still
Frequently losing track of time
Forgetting appointments or everyday tasks
Finding it difficult to get started on tasks
Becoming deeply absorbed in subjects or activities of interest
Acting impulsively or feeling constantly “on the go”
Becoming emotionally overwhelmed more easily than others
Feeling disorganised despite your best efforts
Feeling “lazy” or “not trying hard enough,” despite putting in significant effort

A comprehensive ADHD assessment can provide greater insight into an individual’s strengths, challenges and support needs. It can also help guide recommendations for home, school, work and everyday life, while providing valuable information to support ongoing care and treatment planning.

While psychologists are qualified to assess and diagnose ADHD, only medical practitioners such as psychiatrists and paediatricians can prescribe medication. Our comprehensive assessment reports may assist medical practitioners in considering diagnosis, treatment planning and ongoing care. However, some psychiatrists and paediatricians may choose to undertake additional assessment procedures before prescribing medication, in accordance with their own clinical practice and professional judgement.

If you are already under the care of a psychiatrist or paediatrician, we recommend discussing their individual assessment requirements before booking so you have a clear understanding of the documentation they may require.

AUTISM ASSESSMENTS

Some people recognise autistic characteristics from early childhood, while others reach adulthood before beginning to understand why they have always experienced the world differently. Autism presents differently across individuals and may be influenced by personality, life experiences, gender, age and the ways people have learnt to adapt to the expectations of the world around them.

Our assessments recognise these differences and consider the whole person rather than relying on stereotypes or assumptions about what autism “should” look like.

You may recognise some of the following experiences in yourself or someone you care about:

Needing time alone to recharge after socialising
Finding unexpected change difficult
Feeling overwhelmed in busy or noisy environments
Taking language literally or finding implied meanings confusing
Preferring routine, predictability and structure
Developing strong interests or passions
Masking or camouflaging to fit in with others
Feeling misunderstood or different from those around you

A comprehensive autism assessment can assist in developing a greater understanding of an individual’s strengths, differences and support needs. Reports may also assist in accessing educational adjustments, workplace accommodations and other eligible supports where appropriate.

Some organisations, including the NDIS, may request additional evidence or assessments depending on an individual’s circumstances and current eligibility requirements. Requirements may also change over time.

If you require documentation for a specific purpose, we encourage you to discuss this with us prior to booking so we can help you understand what may be appropriate for your circumstances.

COMBINED ASSESSMENTS

ADHD and autism frequently occur together, and many individuals recognise aspects of both presentations in their own experiences. Because there is often overlap between ADHD and autism, it can be difficult to determine which traits are related to one presentation, the other, or the way they interact. A combined assessment provides a comprehensive understanding of the whole person by exploring both presentations within a single assessment process.

You may recognise some of the following experiences in yourself or someone you care about:

Feeling different but not knowing why
Feeling misunderstood despite trying your best
Finding social situations confusing or exhausting while also feeling impulsive or extroverted
Struggling with organisation, planning or everyday tasks
Thriving with routine but also finding it difficult to stay on track
Hyperfocusing on interests while finding it difficult to start or complete other tasks
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed more easily than others
Masking or camouflaging difficulties to fit in with others

A comprehensive combined ADHD and autism assessment provides an integrated understanding of an individual’s strengths, differences and support needs. Rather than considering each presentation in isolation, we explore how ADHD and autism may interact to influence learning, work, relationships and everyday life. This allows recommendations to be tailored to the individual’s unique profile and can assist in accessing appropriate supports, accommodations and interventions where applicable.

Our combined assessments are comprehensive and evidence-based, resulting in a single integrated report that brings together findings from both assessments.

If your assessment is being undertaken for a specific purpose, such as accessing ADHD medication or applying for supports or services such as through the NDIS, we recommend confirming the documentation requirements with the relevant practitioner or organisation before booking your assessment.

PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Learning does not always come easily or evenly. An individual may have strong abilities in many areas while experiencing persistent difficulty with particular skills such as reading, writing, spelling or mathematics. These difficulties can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of effort, attention or confidence, particularly when someone has developed strategies to work around the areas they find challenging.

Our psychoeducational assessments explore an individual’s cognitive and academic profile to better understand their learning strengths and areas of difficulty, and determine whether they meet criteria for a Specific Learning Disorder in reading (Dyslexia), written expression (Dysgraphia) and/or mathematics (Dyscalculia).

You may recognise some of the following experiences in yourself or your child:

Reading that feels slow, effortful or less fluent than expected
Difficulty accurately reading or sounding out unfamiliar words
Ongoing difficulties with spelling despite practice and support
Finding it difficult to organise and express ideas in writing
Written work taking significantly longer than expected
Difficulty remembering or applying basic number facts
Finding mathematical concepts or calculations difficult to understand
Performing well in some areas of learning while experiencing persistent difficulty in others

Assessment includes evaluation of cognitive abilities and academic achievement, allowing us to develop a detailed understanding of the individual’s learning profile. The assessment report provides personalised recommendations and may assist schools, universities and other educational settings in considering appropriate learning supports and adjustments.

If you require documentation for a specific purpose, we encourage you to discuss this with us prior to booking so we can help you understand what may be appropriate for your circumstances.
