Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that deciding to proceed with an assessment can bring up lots of questions. Below you'll find answers to some of the questions we're asked most often. If you can't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Do I need a referral?

No. You do not need a referral to book an assessment with Jarrah Psychology.

Absolutely. Many people contact us feeling unsure whether ADHD, autism or a combined assessment is the most appropriate pathway. We’ll discuss your concerns with you and help determine the most suitable assessment before you proceed.

We provide assessments for children (6 years and older), adolescents and adults.

We currently have immediate availability. Appointment availability can change over time, so we’ll discuss the earliest suitable appointments with you when you make your enquiry.

The assessment appointment is designed to feel like a relaxed conversation about your experiences. There are no tests with “right” or “wrong” answers. Depending on your assessment pathway, the appointment may include clinical interviews, discussion of your experiences and evidence-based assessment activities that help us better understand your individual profile.

From your initial appointment to your feedback session, the assessment process typically takes approximately 6–8 weeks. This timeframe allows us to carefully review all assessment information, prepare your comprehensive report and provide meaningful recommendations.

Where appropriate, we gather information from people who know you well, such as parents, partners, teachers or other significant people in your life.

You’ll always discuss and agree on who these people are before any information is requested. We will never contact another person without your knowledge and consent.

Wherever possible, collateral information helps us develop a more comprehensive understanding of your experiences across different settings. This information may be gathered through questionnaires, school reports or other relevant documentation. We recognise that this information isn’t always available. Assessments can still proceed without collateral information, although it may limit the amount of evidence available when considering whether diagnostic criteria are met.

Yes. Assessments can be completed via secure telehealth where clinically appropriate. We’ll discuss whether telehealth is suitable for your individual circumstances when you enquire.

Many people develop ways of adapting to or compensating for their difficulties over time. Our assessment process considers developmental history, lived experience, clinical observations and information gathered across multiple sources rather than relying on observations alone.

Absolutely. Many people seek an assessment because they’re looking for greater understanding of their experiences rather than because they’re certain they have ADHD or autism. Part of our role is to help explore these questions with you.

Medicare rebates are available for some autism assessments where eligibility criteria are met.

Under current Medicare criteria, rebates are available for autism assessments for individuals under 25 years of age who have been referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

Medicare rebates are not available for ADHD assessments.

If you’re unsure whether you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, please get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss your circumstances.

You may be able to claim a rebate through your private health insurance, depending on your level of cover. We recommend contacting your health fund before booking to confirm your eligibility and available benefits.

A 10% deposit is required to secure your booking.

By the day of your assessment appointment, 50% of the total assessment fee is required to have been paid.

The remaining balance is payable before your comprehensive assessment report is released.

Yes. Your assessment report belongs to you, and you’re welcome to share it with whomever you choose, including your treating medical practitioner, school, university or workplace.

Yes. Every assessment report includes personalised recommendations tailored to your individual strengths, needs and circumstances. Recommendations may address areas such as home, education, work, daily functioning and accessing appropriate supports.

During your feedback session, we’ll discuss the assessment findings, recommendations and appropriate next steps based on your individual circumstances. Where appropriate, recommendations for additional supports or services may also be discussed.
